How to Apply Your Decal Using the Hinge Method

The hinge method is the easiest way to apply medium/large size decals. The "hinge" tape holds everything in place after you've centered and lined everything up.

Step 1: Clean the Surface

Wipe the area clean and dry before applying your decal. Make sure it is free of dust, dirt, oil, or moisture.

Step 2: Position Your Decal

Place the decal where you want it, with the transfer tape facing up.

Step 3: Create a Center Hinge

Apply a strip of painter’s tape vertically down the center of the decal. This will act as your hinge and keep the decal aligned.

Step 4: Peel Back One Side

Lift one side of the decal away from the surface. Carefully peel the backing paper away, exposing the sticky side of the vinyl.

Step 5: Cut Away the Backing

Trim or tear off the exposed backing paper while holding the decal away from the surface.

Step 6: Apply the First Side

Using a squeegee or credit card, press the decal onto the surface from the center outward.

Step 7: Repeat on the Other Side

Remove the center tape hinge, peel away the remaining backing paper, and apply the second side the same way.

Step 8: Squeegee Firmly

Go over the entire decal with firm pressure to make sure it adheres well.

Step 9: Remove the Transfer Tape

Slowly peel the transfer tape back at a sharp angle. If any vinyl lifts, lay it back down and squeegee again.
